Growing up in the Dominican Republic, Jose Ludovino Sanchez’s playground was the outdoors. A competitive swimmer, when he wasn’t doing laps in the pool, he and his friends were at the beach, soaking up the sun and jumping in the waves. “I loved the warm weather and being in nature and on the water,” Sanchez said. “It was a free-range childhood.”

In addition to his love of the outdoors, Sanchez also developed a love of architecture in the Dominican Republic. He lived in a bustling, fast-growing area with a lot of contemporary homes. He was fascinated by the structures’ modern designs and styles, and spent hours drawing pictures of them. When his parents started asking him what he wanted to be when he grew up, there was no hesitation.
